Although it is common to have a lime wash finish on walls, there are numerous advantages to utilising the Birla white cement wash instead. So, let's find out which amongst the two works best: a lime wash finish on walls or the Birla white cement.

What Is Lime Wash & Birla White Cement?

Before we start discussing their features, first we need to completely understand what these products are.

Lime wash

Lime wash is created by crushing and igniting limestones which are then mixed with water and form a putty-like substance. Once this is done, the aging process takes place, after which the putty-like substance is reduced by using water. As the natural tone of limestone is usually white, thus, the lime wash is also available in the same colour. However, by the addition of natural pigments, the lime wash is also available in grey, dark, beige and so on.

Birla White Cement

The Birla White Cement is a variation of the White Portland Cement. Its superior production process is what gives it that distinct whiteness. In fact, it scores more than 89% on the Hunter Whiteness Scale. With features such as high opacity, superior fineness, high refractive index and more, the Birla white cement is probably the best finish that you can provide your house walls. However, that's not it, the Birla white cement has multiple applications other than walls, including floors and more. One of these applications being the white cement wash.  Unlike lime wash, the required mix is created just by adding water to white cement. The usual proportion of water and Birla White cement is 1:1 and this needs to be thoroughly mixed till no lumps remain.

Now that we are aware of the products, let's look into their properties and uses.

Lime Wash Vs Birla White Cement

In the case of lime wash, once the cementing has concluded a lime wash finish is given to the walls. Usually, lime wash application is best for plaster, brick and other surfaces that have pores. On the other hand, Birla white cement has a variety of benefits. The white cement wash can be applied on both interior walls as well as exterior walls. It serves as a preparation for decorative paints and conceals crevices and minor cracks with a resplendent matte finish.

As compared to walls with lime wash, surfaces of the white cement wash walls are more long-lasting. While lime wash needs to be replenished every year, white cement roughly lasts for about two to three years longer than the said “wash.”

White cement wash has higher coverage than lime wash, which only gives about 1.4 square meters in 1 kg. On the other hand, white cement provides coverage of almost 3 square meters in 1 kg.

Overall the Birla white cement wash is more cost-effective as compared to other alternatives, which is what makes it a suitable choice for budget constraint places. However, the lime wash is still cheaper than the white cement wash price. Although the white cement wash does make up for it, as noted in the higher coverage.

The Birla White cement has water-resistant properties, which can be useful especially in times of heavy monsoon season when there's humidity on the rise. However, the lime wash on the walls may not fare as well.

Another thing to note is that the application of the Birla white cement wash on our walls can be done simply with a brush or a spray, making it an overall easier experience. However, before any application of the white cement, make sure that the surface is completely clean from any grease, dust and so on, by scrubbing the same. This procedure is extremely crucial as it determines the adhesiveness of the white cement.

Conclusion

In the end, it is evident that while lime wash does have its benefits, the Birla White Cement comes out as the victor, simply because of its variety of offerings for our house surfaces. It protects our house walls and gives it a finer finish while also making sure that there's no flaking of paint, thus, providing our walls with a nice luster.
