Precautions to take while applying WallCare Putty

25, August 2020

While painting a new house or repainting an existing one after rains, snow or after excessive wear and tear, one must be sure that the paint is being applied well. The paint must be applied evenly over the putty to avoid breeding of algae, moss and other kinds of dampness over the walls and ceilings. There are different putties available for internal and external walls, but Birla White WallCare Putty, a white cement putty, is a multipurpose product. One can use it on internal and external surfaces. Its high adhesion, paired with high tensile and compressive strength, give you the strength, whereas the German polymers give your walls the protection they need. Since this is the only original putty, it does not demand any sort of curing after application but to avoid such things, be sure to take following precautions to get a surface with a good finish and a nice texture.

Protective gear (goggles, clothes, Zero VOC)-

Protective Gear

A surface groundwork exercise needs to be conducted, and it is necessary to wear safety goggles to protect your eyes and a mask to avoid inhaling dust and dirt. In case of contact with eyes or mouth, wash thoroughly with clean water. The Birla White WallCare Putty has zero VOCs and is a green product which prevents health hazards. Even asthmatic patients and the elderly can be around walls with fresh putty coats without any problems. However, it is still recommended to wear googles and a mask to avoid inhaling dust and dirt. For many types of painting and particulate protection, Birla White always recommends the usage of protective coveralls combining protection, comfort & durability, that can give appropriate protection given the size of the particulates. Just as important, garments should be always soft, lightweight and air-permeable, providing one with a high level of on-the-job comfort. For all potentially hazardous tasks, protective gear is strongly recommended.

Slurry mixing (water ratio, time cap)-

Slurry Mixing Water Ratio

The essential tools for the putty application are a putty knife, paint scraper, sanding block, sandpaper, a piece of cloth, a firm brush and some water. Mix Birla White Wallcare Putty with 36-38 % clean water slowly to make a paste. It is very important that water be added to putty to make a mix and not vice versa. Continue the mixing for 10-15 minutes until a uniform paste is formed. It is vital that the mixing of the “Best Wallcare Putty” should be done thoroughly, preferably with a mechanical mixer. This will help in easy application and obtain more coverage and a smooth uniform shade for further application of the paint. Only prepare a quantity which can be used within 2-3 hours of mixing with water. Stir continuously by hand or by an electric putty mixer for about 10-15 minutes. Mix thoroughly to get a creamy, paste-like consistency. Make sure that it does not create lumps while mixing.

Apply on wet surface-

It is essential that the surface is wetted thoroughly before the application of Birla White Wallcare Putty which is waterproof. The surface should be wet during the application. This ensures higher bonding strength, easy workability & higher coverage with the surface. After thoroughly mixing the Birla White Wallcare Putty, apply the first coat on the moistened wall surface in a bottom to top direction, uniformly with the aid of a putty blade. This would ensure minimum wastage and poor finishes and provide high quality surface.

Don’t be harsh with the emery paper-

Emery Paper

Emery paper is a type of abrasive paper that can be used to remove material from surfaces or mechanically finish a surface. It is recommended not to rub the surface done with Birla White Wallcare Putty strongly or harshly with rough emery paper. Birla White Wallcare Putty has German HP Polymers which doesn’t allow water molecules to reach the paint surface, keeping your walls drier, safer and beautiful as ever. Scrubbing the surface hard breaks this film and drastically decreases the water repellence properties. Different papers perform different jobs, and selecting the right grit can be confusing while starting out. The basic recommendations and rules of thumb are- selecting the right size of sandpaper grit, choosing the appropriate coarseness for the project, considering the best type of grit to choose, and finding the right tool for the easiest effort.

Consider efflorescence-

Efflorescence

Efflorescence is a crystalline deposit of salts often seen on the surface of concrete, brick, stucco or natural stone surfaces. It occurs when water leaves behind salt deposits and is present on masonry surfaces. Generally, the cause of the efflorescence on the wall surface is the brick masonry which is due to the quality of bricks, stand and water. If the effect of efflorescence is very high on the brick masonry, then proper care must be taken to control the efflorescence. The efflorescence on brick masonry will impair with the bonding of the WallCare Putty as is with any other product. The way to completely and permanently prevent both primary and secondary efflorescence in cementitious materials is by using special admixtures that chemically react with and bind the salt-based impurities in the concrete. However, if the source of the water penetration is not addressed, efflorescence may reappear.

Perfection is a lot of little things done right. Especially when it comes to your home.
