Things to keep in mind when using Wall Primer

19, November 2021

A wall primer is a very important part of the painting process. While it’s main aim is to create adhesion between the paint and the surface, it can help in many ways if chosen according to your needs and with proper research of different types of primers and their functions.

Here are some commonly asked questions and their answers to help you choose the perfect wall primer for your home:

What is a wall primer? When is it used?

A wall primer is made up of 20–30% synthetic resin, 60–80% solvent, and 2–5 percent additional agent. Wall Primer is applied to the surface prior to the painting. It's made to stick to surfaces and generate a binding layer that prepares the surface for painting. For the paint coat to go on top of, a wall primer creates a smooth and equal surface. In contrast to paint, a wall primer is designed to increase the filling and binding capabilities of the material beneath it rather than serve as the outermost durable finish.

A wall primer improves the adhesion of the paint to the wall and increases the paint coat's longevity and durability. So, it is advisable to always use wall primer before applying paints on the wall.

Why is it important to use a wall primer?

Priming is one of the most crucial techniques for both interior and exterior painting, yet it is often disregarded. Wall primer paints smooth down rough surfaces, allowing the top color layer to better match the surface. If a freshly painted wall doesn't look as vibrant and brilliant as it should, it's likely that the priming of the wall has been neglected. Using a wall primer is considered mandatory if the material is not water resistant and will be exposed to the conditions like sun, rain and pollutants.

Birla White Extocare exterior wall primer provides 7x more adhesion than any acrylic primer available in the market. It prevents the peeling of your wall topcoat and protects your walls for years to come. Along with adding that extra layer of protection, this product also provides the best possible opacity and whiteness needed to bring out the true tone of paint while costing just Rs. 649 per 10 kg pack.

How to select a wall primer?

Now that you know the importance of using a primer, you need to be very mindful when choosing an external wall primer. Properties like adhesion, base, curing, durability, weather protection, and VOC count are of most importance while choosing a primer for your home.
