16, August 2021

As we welcome the monsoon season with its heavy rainfall and humidity, most of us are already equipped with the best umbrellas, raincoats, and seasonal wear in order to protect ourselves from the rain. The thrill of beginning the rainy season is always a cause of excitement, however, in this process, we tend to overlook a few things, mainly, the fact that rainfall can cause a great amount of damage to our own homes, specifically, our walls.

Waterproof Putty on Walls

Walls are a crucial part of our homes; they act as an integral part of the foundation that holds the house together. However, in most cases, we tend to overlook the care of such an important factor. While we may be aware of things such as wall care and wall putty, what most of us don’t realise is the importance of the same, especially during the rainy season.

Exterior Walls and Damage

During the monsoon, the exterior walls of our home are usually exposed to rainfall, humidity and other external factors and thus, they are more prone to damage. The moisture present in the surrounding seeps into the exterior surface of our home and leads to the interior walls which become damp and then further cause factors such as moulds, wall paint peeling off, leakage, fungus etc. Other causes like splattering rainwater and blocked drainage pipes also make the walls damp and lead to further damage. Hence, it is evident that protection of the exterior walls is crucial. However, now the question arises - ‘What can truly protect our exterior walls from damage?’ The answer for this is very simple, applying waterproof putty for walls.

Waterproofing is a process where a surface is treated in order to make it impenetrable from water. The Waterproof Putty is a putty powder that helps in the process of waterproofing. It can be used on both the interior and the exterior walls of our home. There are many benefits to using waterproof putty for walls, some of them are as follows:

Waterproof

Any cracks present on the surface of our home can lead to the water trickling in and damaging the exterior walls. In order to prevent this, waterproof putty for exterior walls is used. One of the most common components in a waterproof putty are white-cement and re-dispersible polymer. Hence, on the application of the waterproof putty, not only are the cracks present on the surface covered but the polymer present in the putty makes the surface resistant to water.

Efflorescence Resistant

Efflorescence is the crystal-white substance that is most commonly seen on walls. The cause for this is usually the salts, which are already present inside the walls, come in contact with water, start appearing on the walls in the form of white patches. However, the application of the waterproof wall putty prevents the salt from contact to water and thus appearing on the walls, hence protects our walls from efflorescence.

Increased Durability of the Paint

The moisture affected damp walls usually lead to paint peeling off from the interior walls. Repainting the walls is only a temporary solution as the moisture collected is still present in the walls. However, once the exterior waterproof putty is used, it protects the surfaces in our house from water penetration and thus leads to an increased lifespan of the applied topcoat paint.

Hence, the application of waterproof putty for exterior walls benefits us in the long run by providing the necessary protection to our houses. However, now, the most important question arises - Which product to use?

Birla White WallSeal Waterproof Putty

As there are many waterproof putty products available in the market, it becomes difficult for us to make a decision with regards to the product of our choice. Thus, in such cases, the right choice is always a familiar and established brand that can vouch for its products and services. Birla White is one such brand that has its own waterproof putty product, namely, the Wall Seal Waterproof Putty. The Birla white waterproof putty is a white cement-based product that includes active German silicon polymers and is 2x water-resistant, thus, protecting the interior and exterior walls of our home as well as providing a strong base for our walls just before the application of the topcoat paint. It is an eco-friendly product that is curing free and has durability and resistance to hairline cracking.

Application of Waterproof Wall Putty

Now, a lot of us might wonder that since waterproof putty seems to be our best bet for exterior walls, the process of applying the same might be tedious or complicated. However, that is not the case, the process of applying waterproof putty on walls involves wetting the applicable wall surface with water following which the waterproof putty is added to 36% to 38% of water and mixed thoroughly to create a creamy white consistent paste. Now, the first coat is applied to the pre-wetted wall, this is carried out with the help of a putty blade. After 4 hours from the time of application and ensure the wall surface has dried, it is then rubbed gently to remove any loose particles. After this process, a second and final coating is then applied on the wall and left to dry, proceeding with which the topcoat paint can then be applied.

In conclusion, using waterproof putty on our exterior walls benefits us as it not only provides a complete and long-lasting solution to the issue of wall care but is also a product that is easily available for use.
